“Are Sandals resorts couples-only?” is one of the most common questions I get from first-time travelers. The short answer: Sandals markets itself as “for couples in love,” but that does not mean what most people assume. Here is the actual policy and what it means in practice.
The official policy
Sandals’ official policy is that guests must book in twos. You cannot book a Sandals room as a single occupant. Beyond that, Sandals does not actually verify the relationship status of your “two.” You can book as two friends, two siblings, two coworkers, or any other pair. The brand’s marketing emphasizes romantic couples because that is the largest customer segment, not because the policy excludes other pairs.
Adults-only age policies
Sandals Grande Antigua is the only Sandals that allows guests as young as 16. Every other Sandals resort is strictly 18 and up. There are no exceptions for older teens, even with parental travel companions. Families with under-16 kids should book the family version of Sandals instead: see my best Beaches resort guide.
Who actually stays at Sandals besides romantic couples
In practice the guest mix at any Sandals resort is roughly 70% romantic couples (honeymoons, anniversaries, weddings, getaways), 15% friends or family pairs (sisters, mothers/daughters, friends, golf buddies), 10% solo travelers paying double-occupancy rates, and 5% small wedding groups. The “couples-only” branding is more about the absence of children and the romantic atmosphere than about who specifically can book.
Can I book Sandals as a single?
Sort of. Sandals does not officially sell single-occupancy rooms, but you can book a “single supplement” rate which prices a room at roughly 80% of the double-occupancy rate. So you pay a premium per-person but you do get a room. Most solo travelers I have worked with conclude this is not great value compared to a Caribbean boutique adults-only resort that does offer true single-occupancy pricing. Solo Sandals trips work best when you are joining friends who already have a room and you want to be on property.
What about same-sex couples?
Sandals updated its policy in 2004 to explicitly welcome same-sex couples. All inclusions and the Honeymoon Package are available to all couples regardless of sex. The Sandals wedding programs perform same-sex ceremonies on the islands where local law allows (note that not every Caribbean nation recognizes same-sex marriage; Jamaica, for example, does not). For destination weddings specifically, talk to the Sandals wedding planner before booking to confirm the legal mechanics for your specific resort and home country.
What about traveling with parents or adult siblings?
Common and welcomed. The two-occupant rule means you’d book each adult as half of a “couple” pair, but Sandals will sell you adjoining rooms for two pairs traveling together (parents + adult kids, two adult siblings + their partners, etc.). Many of my clients book multi-generational adult trips this way for landmark birthdays or anniversaries.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Sandals resorts only for married couples?
No. Sandals markets to romantic couples but the actual booking policy only requires two adult occupants per room, regardless of relationship. Friends, siblings, parents/adult kids, and any other adult pair can book a room.
Can I bring my child to a Sandals resort?
No. Every Sandals is adults-only. Sandals Grande Antigua allows guests 16 and up; every other Sandals is strictly 18 and up. For family trips with kids of any age, book a Beaches resort (the family version of Sandals).
Can I go to Sandals as a single person?
Technically no, but you can book at the single-supplement rate (~80% of double-occupancy) which gets you a room. Most solo travelers find better value at adults-only resorts that offer true single-occupancy pricing. Solo Sandals usually only makes sense if you are joining friends who already have a room.
Are Sandals resorts welcoming to same-sex couples?
Yes. Sandals updated its policy in 2004 to explicitly welcome same-sex couples. All inclusions and the Honeymoon Package apply equally. Same-sex wedding ceremonies are performed on the islands where local law allows (not Jamaica). Talk to the Sandals wedding planner about specific island requirements.
