Words cannot describe how truly fantastic & magical this place is. We chose Sandals Halcyon for our main honeymoon, and we loved every second we were there. As soon as you walk into the resort there are lovely feelings & positive energy coming from all the staff, from then on you know you’re somewhere very special.
The staff aren’t staff they are family; they are the most wonderful people you will ever meet and are the pure essence of St Lucia. You will not meet more friendly people who will always stop and have a chat but in the ultra-rare case there is an issue, they will it a number one priority to get that issue resolved.
I’ve split this review into subsections to go over each of the part of our stay.
Arrival
On landing at Hewanorra Airport it’s only a short walk from the tarmac through the arrivals area. Once you’ve cleared immigration, collected your cases and passed customs you head to the Sandals lounge, this is on your left as you’re walking towards the exit however me and my wife were so stoked and excited, we walked straight passed it. You’re welcomed by lovely Sandals staff who book you in and make you feel at home, here you can grab a comfy seat, have a cold beverage, use the toilets and grab a packet of very tasty Shirley’s Coconut Biscuits.
We weren’t waiting long for our bus transfer (about 20mins) and after a quick load up we were enroute, the journey is about 90mins and was comfortable throughout. Our driver was great pointing our various landmarks & answering questions during the journey so it was more like a tour, the roads are windy, and the scenery is gorgeous so before you know you’ve arrived at Halcyon.
As soon as you step off the bus we were greeted by the lovely welcoming staff Kernisha, Jeanny & Ruth who gave us cold towels followed by a super welcoming song performed by them before taking us over to the Club Sandals Lounge. In the lounge we had a tasty welcome rum punch beverage before being taken in person to our room where our cases had kindly been delivered prior to our arrival.
The Club Sandals Lounge is where the orientation takes place the day after you arrive which tells you all about the restaurants and facilities on the resort along with details of how to get to the other Sandals Resorts via the free shuttle bus. It’s also a great place to go should you want to grab a book, have a drink or if there is a particular sport you want to watch, just ask the staff & will show it on one of the TVs. The Club Lounge also offers drink tasting sessions on Thursdays, we booked onto the Martini evening and Cocktail evening too.
Fitness Centre & Spa Facilities
Both my wife & I were eager to check out the fitness centre at Halcyon and we were not disappointed. There are ample cardio machines (treadmills, steppers, cross trainers, bikes & rowing machines) along with various weight machines and free weights. The gym air con is ice cold which kept us super cool during our work outs, plus there is ice water which is kept topped up fully along with lots of towels for use whilst working out. We met Germaine who is part of the fitness team who was super cool, and we had a lot of banter with, he runs a tight ship making sure the gym is always top.
Halcyon also has a range of massage options as part of the spa offerings; we met one of masseuses called Dawn who I booked a 60min sport massage with as I had a huge knot near my left shoulder. Wow, Dawn absolutely made sure that the knot was gone along with any others that were present, the massage was deep by my god did I feel like a new person, it was worth every cent. I do a lot of running/running events so get sports massages throughout the year but hands down Dawn’s was the best I’ve ever had – it was no nonsense, lets get you fixed.
Pools
There are 3 pools at the Halcyon, the long lazy pool where people chill on floats having chats/jokes. A quiet pool in the same area which has a swim up bar and the main pool which also has a swim up bar but is where all the entertainment during the day is had. There are lots of sun loungers by each pool, but people do get up early to reserve their loungers by putting towels down. Some other guests got annoyed by this but in all fairness whenever my wife & I went to any of the pools during the day, I think the longest we waited was around 20mins before a sun lounger with umbrella became available so not bad at all.
The staff at the pool bars are superb, you have major amounts of chats, jokes and banter. I would always have plenty with Ryan by poolside as we’d stop and chat in the morning and reassure me that our drinks will be waiting when we’d arrive at the pool later.
The cocktails at the pools were immense, my wife was a huge fan of the Island Smile & frozen pina colada with coconut rum. I was a massive fan of the Caribbean mule and a big favourite for both of us was the Bob Marley – if you try any of the cocktails you won’t be disappointed!!
The staff as the poolside bars ran each of them with ease despite the constant stream of people & drinks orders they were cool, calm & collected serving everyone as speed – Ryan, Kareem, Nicole, Danielle & Shaquelle were just ace to us and everyone.
Our Room
Our room was right outside the lazy pool, which was a perfect location as the fitness centre, beach & beach bistro were seconds away. The room was spacious with ice cold a/c and fan with a nice large bathroom too. Our room was maintained by Laura who was just wonderful, we would always have a chat, and she always gave us extra love during our stay, she phoned us on our check out day and came over to say goodbye which was such a lovely touch. Richie who worked on the room maintaining team with Laura who was so incredibly friendly and such a hard worker, Richie and I would also chat each day & was always a pleasure. Within our room there was a fully stocked bar with gin, rum, whiskey along with mixers plus Piton beers. Christopher always made sure our bar was on top form, Christopher along with Kaplan, Jaleel, Miguel & Nicholas always worked flat out during the day with drinks trolleys making sure all the rooms were stocked up.
Restaurants & Eateries
There are 5 sit down restaurants and one take away van all of which will not disappoint. Two of the restaurants need to be booked in advance which is very easy to do by popping down to the culinary desk, we were served by Elizabeth & Daynelle who were diamonds in getting our bookings sorted.
Bayside Brasserie is where breakfast buffet is served each morning, the restaurant is open sided so you see and hear the sea which is super. It has everything you could possible want from cereals & fruit to cooked breakfast items such as bacon, eggs & freshly made omelettes right through to traditional creole dishes such ackee & codfish, fried plantains, saltfish & coco tea, all the creole dishes were my favourite and was heaven on a plate every breakfast. Dolores always welcomed us each morning and we were looked after to the max by Berthalina, Amanda & Natalie. We always had a morning chat with Berthalina and on our very last morning she very kindly made my wife & I a buck’s fizz which was such a lovely touch. Bayside does a lunch buffet which changes its theme each day, we tried the creole which was a firm favourite along with the Asian cuisine which was also very hearty. Bayside also hosts dinner which is based on French cuisine all of which is superb, the quiche to start was divine and the chicken for main was full of flavour with the bacon gravy. The other main courses with beef and lamb were also first class and if you wish there are snails for starters. In the evenings we went to Bayside Brasserie MBA welcomed us with open arms, at times when it was busy he’d take a note tell us to relax with a drink at the Irie bar & he’d come get us when our table was ready, a true gent in every way.
Mario’s is the Italian restaurant serving dinner, we were always greeted with a lovely huge hug from Celina when we visited. As my wife is half Italian it was guaranteed to be a hit and it very much was, she was a big fan of the carbonara & risotto, with mine being seafood linguine & norma pasta. All of the dishes we tried super filling being full of flavour, the antipasti was incredibly impressive with a vast selection of meats, veg, breads & pasta dishes. You must be careful not to each too many antipasti as it is so morish with some of the dishes changing each time we visited. We were served by Gloria one evening who had just started working there, she did a stella job and genuinely ran the show like a pro. We had our final dinner at Marios which Celina made extra special by placing petals on our table, we were served by Kersherma who always made us feel great and was the first person to serve us at the start of our holiday. Other staff who were great in Marios were Daniel, Thecla & Liz.
Kimonos is a restaurant which has to be booked in advance, on arrival Dong kindly showed us to our shared table. It’s unlike any other restaurant you’ll visit where we were you are treated to not only an immense feast of Japanese food which is cooked in front of you but also a feast of entertainment by your master chef & MC. We were incredibly lucky to have Lorenzo who was just first class and a huge laugh, a true lad and a half. Whilst there we were served for drinks & starters by Kyvan who sorted me out a cracking saki beer which was superb.
Other catering staff Marcelline & Severine were superb at the beach bistro and McQuale at the pizza van was just incredible, those pizzas were sooooo tasty each & every time… especially the jerk one… I wish I was eating one now as I type this review. All the restaurants are overseen by Francis, Junior & Patrick who were all heroic in every sense of the word, they would always find time to stop for a laugh & joke which was just class.
Entertainment
The entertainment was golden, during the day at the main pool there was always quizzes, competitions & pool volleyball along with plenty banter & laughs throughout. In the evening it hit supreme levels with fire shows, live bands (reggae, country & western, disco). There was also a fantastic Michael Jackson show hosted inside plus a St Patricks celebration with full Soca band. All the entertainments are organised by a small group of extremely young talented individuals who are just brilliant at what they do. Lashaun (The Don), Boozie, Adam, Jay, Samania, Ted Roy & Brandon, we shared plenty fun & brilliant times in the evenings. We were lucky to have lunch with Lashaun (The Don) & Jay on one of the days which was just an honour, it flet like we were having lunch with celebrities. After lunch Jay sorted out a ride on this inflatable thing which is towed by the watersports speed boat, it was so incredibly fun with Samania joining us also. Nothing was too big or too small, the entertainments team were there to make sure you had as much fun as possible.
During the evening’s entertainment the Irie Bar would be in full swing with all the bar team working incredibly hard to ensure we were all well supplied. We marvelled at how supremely fast the staff were being able to serve 2 -3 people pretty much at the same time. Vince, Chris & Daniel & Renial were my main men, so many jokes, chats into the early hours of the morning whilst the Chairmans Reserve on the rocks was flowing, it was pure class. Throughout the evenings all the Irie Bar staff worked immensely hard both at the bar & walking around collecting glasses/orders so guests were looked after to the highest levels. A big shout out to Irie Bar team members Josieanne, Devron, Javron, Candi, Shaquille, Kayla, Anthea, Jamal, Darren, Jonathan, Shantonelle, Kandia, Michaela, Joanna, Nicole & Avil – Much love all!!
Excursions
In total we went on 4 excursions. Firstly, to the mud baths & waterfall on the catamaran which was a super enjoyable day (we were full of rum punch by the end heehee), Will-i-am was present too so some super camera shots were obtained. On the Friday night we did the Gros Islay Street party, which was excellent, we ate some local food, so I was in heaven & danced away to some epic tunes. We also did the rum distillery tour hosted by Storming Norman where the helpings of rum were extremely generous!! The final excursion was that of climbing the Pitons, it was tough, very tough but worth it is every single sense. It’s more of a scramble than hike so sturdy running trainers are an absolute minimum, full hiking boots would be the optimum & best footwear. The views were spectacular & being able to drink a piton at the top of one of the pitons is just a chance you can’t turn down. Big Rich was our tour guide to and from the mountains, he was just class and one of the coolest dude’s we’ve ever met.
All our excursions were booked through the travel desk in Halcyon. The next we visit though we’ll be giving the guys on the beach a shout. Eric, Kennedy, McGuyvar & Johnathan all offer accredited excursions with very high TripAdvisor reviews, all of them are really top guys so we kicked ourselves for not booking a tour with them but 100% will next time.
Professional Photos
Ross did a cracking photo shoot of us both on the beach and at various places around the resort. Will-i-am also took some shots on our catamaran trip along with Merklyn when we at dinner in Kimonos. All the shots were brilliant across all 3 photographers, so we ensured we purchased some of the photos through the photo shop to place up at home.
We would also like to give a big shout out to the following Halcyon team members. Ron & Roniel on the front desk, Travis & Gloria from Security, Shawn & Lanc in housekeeping/grounds maintenance, chefs Danni & Vincent, Porters Leri & Elsen, Cleus on Loyalty Travel. Aaron, Garvin, Tarick, Lenard & Sherkel plus Keith & Jaychaim from Water Sports.
Winfried is doing a first-class job as resort manager & is also top lad to have a chat with. It thanks though to all the first class members of staff he’s got working in all areas around Halcyon which make such a memorable magical place. The work ethic that is instilled in all the team members across the resort ensured both my wife & I had a truly other worldly experience on the greatest Caribbean Island that is St Lucia.
The population and especially the young folk in the UK could learn a huge amount from all the staff at Halcyon. If I was to start my own business I would head hunt every one of the extremely talented individuals across every single department with Sandals Halcyon.
Our trip & experience in Halcyon was just positives on more positives, we had no negatives at any point. The only negative we did experience was hearing & seeing how rude some of the fellow guests were to the staff, it made my wife so incredibly annoyed, but fair play each team member stayed calm, composed & professional throughout but it’s just sad that people think as they’re staying as a guest it gives them carte blanche to act so disrespectfully.
Thank you for such a wonderful, beautiful & exquisite14 days in paradise, we look very very forward to returning in the coming year or two. Big apologies for posting this review so incredibly late but I hope it portrays what such a great place Sandals Halcyon Beach is.
Much love, many thanks & see you soon - Emily & Alistair, Room 600 (16/03/25-31/03/25)
