Sandals Royal Curaçao is the chain’s first Curacao Sandals (opened 2022): included MINI Cooper Convertible rentals, Dutch bikes, the unique Awa Seaside Swim-Up suites, and one of the chain’s strongest dive programs.

Where Sandals Royal Curaçao is and how to get there

Sandals Royal Curacao sits on the Santa Barbara Plantation on Curacao’s southeastern coast, just 15 minutes from Curacao International Airport (CUR). Curacao is below the typical Atlantic hurricane corridor (similar to Grenada and Saint Lucia), which keeps the shoulder season usable.

Flights into CUR have nonstop options from Miami, Newark, JFK, Charlotte, Atlanta, and Toronto. The Sandals airport lounge is included on arrival. Worth knowing: this is the chain’s first and only Curacao Sandals (opened 2022), so the property is one of the newest in the chain along with Sandals Saint Vincent (2024) and Sandals Dunn’s River (2023). My take on the vibe at Sandals Royal Curaçao

Royal Curacao is the most explore-the-island Sandals in the chain. The included MINI Cooper Convertible rental program (one of the chain’s only Sandals where guests get a self-drive car as part of the all-inclusive) plus the Dutch bike fleet means most guests spend at least one or two days off-property exploring the island’s beaches, the colorful Willemstad waterfront, and the salt flats. This breaks the typical Sandals “stay on the resort all week” pattern in a genuinely good way.

The architecture leans Dutch-Caribbean: bright primary colors (mustard yellow, deep red, ocean blue), pitched gabled rooflines, the all-day Dutch cafe in the lobby. The crowd here skews adventure-curious couples and dive-focused honeymooners. Energy level is medium: livelier than the boutique Sandals, calmer than the Jamaica mega-resorts.

The headline room category is the Awa Seaside Swim-Up Suite: walk-out swim-up directly to a private oceanfront pool channel, butler service, oceanfront patio. This is one of the most-photographed swim-up categories the chain has built since 2020.

The beach

The Santa Barbara Plantation beach at Royal Curacao is private, about 600 feet of frontage, golden sand (Curacao’s reef geology gives a slightly more golden tone than the white-white of the Bahamas), calm-water swimmable. The water clarity is excellent (Curacao’s southern position keeps the water clear year-round) and the offshore reef is genuinely good.

The reef supports a strong shore-snorkel program. Sandals runs daily free shore-snorkel sessions plus snorkel/dive boat trips to the famous Tugboat Wreck (a shallow-water shipwreck snorkel/dive site, 30 minutes by boat). The MINI Cooper rental lets you also drive 30-60 minutes to the famous Curacao public beaches (Cas Abao, Playa Kenepa Grandi, Playa Lagun) for variety.

The pools and swim-up scene

Multiple pools across the property including the marquee Awa Seaside Swim-Up channel that connects to the swim-up suite walkouts. The main beachfront pool sits between the lobby and the beach with the resort’s primary swim-up bar. The infinity pool overlooks the open ocean from the upper-tier suite cluster.

Worth knowing: Royal Curacao does NOT have OWBs themselves; the Awa Seaside Swim-Up suites are the closest equivalent room category. 361 rooms across the chain’s most-modern post-2020 design. The marquee category is the Awa Seaside Swim-Up Butler Suite: walk-out swim-up directly to the oceanfront pool channel, butler service, the most-photographed swim-up category Sandals has built since the OWB launch.

Best entry pick: Caribbean Honeymoon Walkout Club Level. Direct ground-floor patio, club lounge access, premium amenities. Roughly 30% above the basic Caribbean tier.
Best mid-tier pick: Awa Seaside Swim-Up Butler Suite. Walk-out swim-up to the oceanfront pool channel, butler service. Mid-$1,500s per night during shoulder season.

Dining at Sandals Royal Curaçao

8 specialty restaurants on the resort plus three food trucks (more food-truck variety than Royal Bahamian‘s two-truck fleet). Reservations are not required at most venues; butler guests get reservations made for them.

Vincent (modern French Caribbean): the dinner reservation everyone tries to get. Plate-style modern French with Caribbean accents.
Cafe de Paris (French bistro): the casual French alternative.
Aolos (modern Mediterranean): plate-style Mediterranean small plates.
Toscanini’s (Italian): wood-fired pizza.
Soy Sushi Bar (sushi): casual sushi option, fresh sashimi.
The Latin Quarter (Latin fusion): Caribbean and South American small plates.
Plus 2 more on top of that, plus the three food trucks (Bahamian conch fritters, crepes, and Caribbean street food).

13 bars total. Top-shelf liquor (Hendricks, Maker’s Mark, Patron Silver), unlimited Robert Mondavi Twin Oaks wine, premium upgrades for butler-tier guests. The all-day Dutch cafe in the lobby is a unique touch (the only Sandals with a dedicated Dutch-style cafe, which works because Curacao is a former Dutch colony).

Activities, watersports, and what’s included

The all-inclusive includes: PADI scuba (two boat dives a day, plus free Open Water certification), Hobie Cats, paddleboards, kayaks, snorkeling, pickleball, and the fitness center. Plus the headline novelty: included MINI Cooper Convertible rentals (1-2 days included with most suite categories) and Dutch bikes for in-resort and short-distance off-resort use.

Multiple ceremony venues: beachfront on Santa Barbara Plantation, Awa Seaside swim-up channel deck (the marquee elevated venue), garden chapel for indoor backup. When to go and how to find a deal

The Royal Curacao shoulder season runs late April through mid-June and again mid-August through early December. Curacao sits below the typical Atlantic hurricane corridor (similar to Grenada and Saint Lucia), so the August-November shoulder window is genuinely usable. Peak winter (December through April) is the most expensive window; January through March is the deepest peak.

Royal Curacao participates fully in the Sandals deal calendar. Sandals 7-7-7 sales (January, April, October) typically deliver 35-45% off rack rate. Black Friday usually adds another 5-10%.
