Sandals Dunn's River Review (2026): The Newest Jamaica Flagship

Sandals Dunn’s River is the newest Jamaica flagship (opened 2023): the most modern Sandals rooms, 12 restaurants, the chain’s only river-pool complex, and the new Latitude rum club.

Where Sandals Dunn’s River is and how to get there

Sandals Dunn’s River sits just east of the famous Dunn’s River Falls on Jamaica’s north coast in Ocho Rios. The 105-minute Sandals transfer from Sangster International (MBJ) is the same as Ochi and Royal Plantation. Stay at 1, Play at 2 connects you to Sandals Ochi (15 minutes west) for an extra 17 restaurants on the same booking. Sandals Royal Plantation also adds dining privileges through Stay at 3.

Flights into MBJ have nonstop options from most US east coast hubs and Toronto. The Sandals airport lounge is included on arrival. Worth knowing: the resort opened May 2023 (formerly the Jewel Dunn’s River, completely rebuilt by Sandals) so even guests who stayed at the older property will not recognize the new layout. My take on the vibe at Sandals Dunn’s River

Dunn’s River is the most modern Sandals in Jamaica, by a clear margin. The architecture is current: clean lines, neutral palette, modernist landscaping, the room interiors are the chain’s most up-to-date design language. After two years of guest stays, the property still feels brand-new because the build quality was higher than typical resort renovations.

The crowd here is the newest-property draw: couples specifically wanting the latest Sandals, plus repeat Sandals veterans who have stayed at the older Jamaica properties (Negril, Montego Bay, Ochi) and want to compare. You will see plenty of “we always come to Sandals; we wanted to see the new one” trips. Energy level is medium-high: more activity than Royal Plantation, less than Ochi, more polished than either.

The marquee Latitude Rum Club is the headline new venue for the chain: a curated rum library with 100+ Caribbean rums, butler-tier rum tastings, and the most photographed bar interior built by Sandals in the past decade.

The beach

The beach is private, white sand, calm-water swimmable, about 600 feet of frontage. The water clarity is solid (the Dunn’s River area has clearer water than the busy Ochi cove just down the road) and the offshore reef is good enough to support the resort’s snorkel program directly off the beach.

The cabana program is more developed than the older Sandals: butler-tier guests get reserved beachfront cabanas with a daybed, premium drink service, and the option for in-cabana dining. The Dunn’s River Falls themselves are visible from the eastern end of the beach (you can see the cascades from the loungers if you book a beachfront room on that side).

The pools and swim-up scene

Five main pools and two river pools. The river pools are the headline: a winding river-style pool complex (the only one in the Jamaica Sandals lineup at the time of writing) that lets you swim from one zone of the resort to another through connected water channels. There is a swim-up bar in the middle. The main beachfront pool sits between the lobby and the beach with the resort’s best sunset bar.

The rooms (and which suite to book)

285 rooms across the most modern Sandals room categories. The marquee categories are the new Sky Villas (private one-and two-bedroom villas on the upper levels of the new buildings, with private rooftop plunge pools and full butler service) and the Latitude Skypool Suites (the chain’s newest Skypool format, with a private elevated infinity pool patio that overlooks the Caribbean).

Best entry pick: Caribbean Honeymoon Walkout Club Level. Direct ground-floor patio, club lounge access, premium amenities. Roughly 30% above the basic Caribbean tier.
Best mid-tier pick: Latitude Skypool One Bedroom Butler Suite. Private elevated infinity-pool patio with butler service. Mid-$1,500s per night during shoulder season.
Best splurge pick: Sky Villa Two Bedroom Butler Suite. Private rooftop plunge pool, two bedrooms, the most space at the property. $2,500+ per night peak.

Worth knowing: Dunn’s River does NOT have OWBs. The Latitude Skypool Suites are the closest equivalent (private elevated pool patios, but not over the water). Dining at Sandals Dunn’s River

12 specialty restaurants on the resort plus dining privileges at all 17 of Sandals Ochi‘s restaurants and all 5 of Sandals Royal Plantation‘s restaurants through Stay at 1, Play at 3. That is 34 restaurants effectively. Reservations are not required at most venues; butler guests get reservations made for them.

Latitude Rum Club (cocktail lounge): the headline new bar venue. 100+ Caribbean rums, curated tasting flights, the most photographed Sandals bar interior in the past decade.
Bayside (modern Caribbean): plate-style modern Caribbean, beachfront patio.
Schooners Seafood Grille (seafood, beachfront): the catch-of-the-day spot, lunch is more reliable than dinner.
Soy Sushi Bar (sushi): casual sushi option, fresh sashimi.
Aolos (modern Mediterranean): the standout dinner reservation, plate-style Mediterranean small plates.
Italian Job (Italian): wood-fired pizza is the standout.

Activities, watersports, and what’s included

The all-inclusive includes: PADI scuba (two boat dives a day, plus free Open Water certification), Hobie Cats, paddleboards, kayaks, snorkeling, glass-bottom boats, pickleball, and the fitness center. Plus included green fees at the nearby Upton Estate Golf and Country Club (the same Sandals-owned course used by Ochi and Royal Plantation, accessed by complimentary shuttle).

For divers: the Dunn’s River area reef is decent. The chain’s strongest dive picks are still Sandals Grenada and Sandals Royal Curacao, but Dunn’s River runs a well-staffed program. For chain-wide comparison see my best Sandals for scuba diving ranking.

Off-resort excursions: Dunn’s River Falls is right next door (the most-popular Jamaica excursion, 5 minutes by shuttle), Mystic Mountain (10 minutes), Konoko Falls (the quieter alternative), the Blue Hole at White River (45 minutes inland). All bookable through the resort.

Weddings, honeymoons, and proposals at Sandals Dunn’s River

Dunn’s River hosts a strong wedding calendar (newest-property draw plus Dunn’s River Falls as the iconic backdrop). Multiple ceremony venues: beachfront on the cove, Sky Pool elevated platform, garden chapel for indoor backup. The complimentary Sandals wedding package works the standard way: 3+ night stay and the standard ceremony is free for the host couple.

Dunn’s River sits in the splurge tier of the Jamaica Sandals lineup, mostly because of the new-property pricing premium plus the Sky Villa and Skypool categories.

vs. Sandals Ochi: the immediate sister property, 15 minutes west. Ochi is older, larger (515 rooms vs 285), with more restaurants (17 vs 12). Dunn’s River is the newest, most modern. Stay at 1, Play at 3 lets you split.
vs. Sandals Royal Plantation: Royal Plantation is the all-butler boutique (74 suites). Dunn’s River is the larger newest-flagship play. Different vacations entirely.

When to go and how to find a deal

The Dunn’s River shoulder season runs late April through mid-June and again late August through early November. Shoulder gives you the deeper deal stack and lighter occupancy. Peak winter (December through April) is the most expensive window; January through March is the deepest peak. The newest-property pricing premium is most noticeable in peak season; shoulder season closes the gap with the older Jamaica Sandals.

Dunn’s River participates fully in the Sandals deal calendar. Sandals 7-7-7 sales (January, April, October) typically deliver 35-45% off rack rate. Black Friday usually adds another 5-10%. Stack the free anniversary night, the 10% military and first-responder discount, and the free honeymoon package for combined discounts of 50-55% off rack rate. My verdict for 2026

Sandals Dunn’s River is the right Sandals for couples who want the newest Jamaica property in the chain. The river-pool complex, the Latitude Rum Club, the Sky Villas with rooftop plunge pools, the most modern room interiors. It is the chain’s flagship-launch pick.
