I am Jim, a Sandals Chairmanโs Royal Club Diamond Elite member who helps over 1,000 couples a year plan their Sandals getaway. Sandals Royal Barbados is the chainโs only all-suite Sandals (every room is a suite, every guest gets a Rolls-Royce-equipped airport transfer for select tiers) plus a 5-pin bowling alley and 21 restaurants when paired with sister Sandals Barbados.
This is my full 2026 review of Sandals Royal Barbados: the beach, the rooms, the food, the pools, weddings and honeymoons, how it stacks up against the rest of the chain, and when to go for the best deal. You can check current rates and availability on Sandals.com if you want to compare while you read.
Quick take for 2026
- Where: Maxwell Coast, on the south coast of Barbados
- Rooms: 338 suites, every single one a suite (no entry-tier rooms)
- Airport: Grantley Adams International (BGI), 30-minute Sandals transfer
- Best for: couples who want every room to be a suite, repeat Sandals guests upgrading from sister Sandals Barbados, anyone wanting the rooftop pool plus the bowling alley novelty
- Skip if: you want OWBs (book Saint Vincent or Grande St. Lucian), the value entry pricing on the same beach (book Sandals Barbados), or the chainโs strongest diving (book Grenada or Royal Curacao)
- My rating: 4.7 out of 5 (the chainโs most-suite-dense property)
Where Sandals Royal Barbados is and how to get there
Sandals Royal Barbados sits on the Maxwell Coast on Barbadosโs south coast, walking distance from sister Sandals Barbados (you can literally walk between them). The 30-minute Sandals transfer from Grantley Adams International (BGI) is one of the easier Sandals airport experiences. Stay at 1, Play at 2 connects you to sister Sandals Barbados (next door) for an effective 21+12 = 33 restaurants plus 11+5 = 16 pools across the two properties.
Flights into BGI have nonstop options from JFK, Miami, Newark, Charlotte, Atlanta, Toronto, and London. The Sandals airport lounge is included on arrival, plus select-tier suites get Rolls-Royce-equipped airport transfers and escorted fast-track immigration. Worth knowing: Barbados is below the typical Atlantic hurricane corridor (similar to Grenada and Saint Lucia), which keeps the shoulder season usable. Full Barbados context lives in my Barbados vacation guide once published.
My take on the vibe at Sandals Royal Barbados
Royal Barbados is the chainโs most modern-feeling property in the Caribbean tier (newer than Negril and Montego Bay; older but more architectural than the post-2020 Saint Vincent and Royal Curacao). The architecture is bright modern Caribbean with white columns, polished marble lobby floors, the rooftop pool deck with sunset bar. The whole property reads polished-resort rather than barefoot-beach.
The crowd here is the most polished on average of any Sandals: more โwe landed in business classโ guests, more milestone-anniversary couples, more repeat Sandals butler veterans. The all-suite layout (no entry-tier rooms) self-selects guests willing to pay for suite-level pricing across the board.
The headline novelty is Lovers Lanes, a 5-pin bowling alley on the resort. The only Sandals with bowling. It plays as a date-night activity in the evening rather than a primary daytime draw, but the photo-op is real.
The beach
The Maxwell Coast beach is shared between Sandals Royal Barbados and Sandals Barbados, with a continuous quarter-mile stretch of pink-tinted sand (Barbados beaches lean toward a slight pink hue from coral fragments mixed into the sand). The water is calm-to-moderate (the south coast is more active than the western Sandals beaches in Saint Lucia or Grenada), with a sandy bottom and good clarity.
The reef offshore from Maxwell Coast supports a basic shore-snorkel program. Sandals runs daily free shore-snorkel sessions plus snorkel-boat trips to the Carlisle Bay shipwrecks (a 30-minute boat ride to a shallow snorkel/dive site with multiple wrecks). Sunset is across the open Caribbean.
The pools and swim-up scene
11 pools and 6 whirlpools (the most pools of any Sandals outside Ochi). The marquee is the rooftop pool with the sunset bar (one of the best sunset photo spots in the chain). The main beachfront pool sits between the suites and the beach with the resortโs primary swim-up bar. Multiple smaller plunge pools attached to swim-up suite categories.
14 bars total, including rooftop and swim-up bars. Worth knowing: Royal Barbados does NOT have OWBs. The rooftop pool plus the swim-up suite categories are the room-feature headlines. Detailed comparison of every Sandals swim-up category is in my Sandals swim-up suites guide.
The rooms (and which suite to book)
338 rooms, every single one a suite. Royal Barbados is the chainโs only all-suite Sandals (similar in concept to Sandals Royal Plantation which is all-butler, but Royal Barbados is bigger at 338 vs 74 suites). Categories range from the entry tier (Caribbean Junior Suite) up through the top-end (Skypool Penthouse Two-Story Butler Suite).
- Best entry pick: Caribbean Honeymoon Junior Suite Club Level. Junior suite layout (sitting area separate from bed), club lounge access, premium amenities. Roughly $700 per night during shoulder season.
- Best mid-tier pick: Skypool Honeymoon One Bedroom Butler Suite. Private elevated infinity-pool patio plus butler service. Mid-$1,500s per night during shoulder season.
- Best splurge pick: Skypool Penthouse Two Story Butler Suite. Two-story penthouse with private rooftop infinity pool, butler service, escorted Rolls-Royce airport transfers. $2,500+ per night peak.
Worth knowing: select top-tier suites include Rolls-Royce-equipped airport transfers and escorted fast-track immigration. For overwater inventory comparison (Royal Barbados does not have it), see Sandals overwater bungalows. For the broader Club Level vs Butler decision, see Sandals Club Level vs Butler.
Dining at Sandals Royal Barbados
21 specialty restaurants on the resort plus dining privileges at all 12 of Sandals Barbadosโs restaurants through Stay at 1, Play at 2. That is 33 restaurants effectively. Reservations are not required at most venues; butler guests get reservations made for them. This is the deepest dining lineup in the eastern Caribbean Sandals.
- Butchโs Chophouse (steakhouse): the dinner reservation everyone tries to get. Wood-fired meats, jacket-encouraged for dinner, strong wine list.
- Soy Sushi Bar (sushi): casual sushi option, fresh sashimi.
- Chi Modern Asian (Pan-Asian): the standout Asian small-plates option.
- Kimonos (Japanese teppanyaki): chef-at-the-table show.
- La Parisienne (French bistro): white-tablecloth, plate-style French.
- Schooners Seafood (seafood, beachfront): catch-of-the-day spot.
- The Sea (seafood): the second seafood venue, more plate-style than Schooners.
- American Tavern (American bar food): the casual late-night option.
- Donuts and More (gourmet donuts): the chainโs only dedicated gourmet donut bar.
- Plus 12 more on top of that.
14 bars total. Top-shelf liquor (Hendricks, Makerโs Mark, Patron Silver), unlimited Robert Mondavi Twin Oaks wine, premium upgrades for butler-tier guests.
Activities, watersports, and whatโs included
The all-inclusive includes: PADI scuba (two boat dives a day, plus free Open Water certification), Hobie Cats, paddleboards, kayaks, snorkeling, glass-bottom boat, tennis, and the fitness center. Plus the unique Lovers Lanes 5-pin bowling alley (the only Sandals with bowling).
For divers: Royal Barbadosโs program is solid. The Carlisle Bay shipwrecks are the headline dive site. The chainโs strongest dive picks are still Sandals Grenada and Sandals Royal Curacao. For chain-wide comparison see my best Sandals for scuba diving ranking.
Off-resort excursions: Harrisonโs Cave (the Bridgetown limestone cavern tour), the Mount Gay Rum tour, the Animal Flower Cave at the northern tip of the island. All bookable through the resort.
Weddings, honeymoons, and proposals at Sandals Royal Barbados
Royal Barbados hosts a strong wedding calendar. Multiple ceremony venues: beachfront on Maxwell Coast (sunset photo), rooftop pool deck (the resortโs marquee elevated venue), garden chapel for indoor backup. The complimentary Sandals wedding package works the standard way: 3+ night stay and the standard ceremony is free for the host couple.
Vow renewals follow the same rule (see my Sandals vow renewal guide); the rooftop pool sunset vow-renewal is the most-photographed setup. For couples planning to propose first, the rooftop sunset bar is the most-requested proposal venue. See my Sandals proposal packages guide. Pair with the free honeymoon package and the free anniversary night on a return trip.
How Sandals Royal Barbados compares to its sister resorts
Royal Barbados sits in the splurge tier of the Sandals lineup, mostly because of the all-suite pricing baseline. The headline differentiators are all-suite layout, the rooftop pool, the bowling alley, and the deep dining variety with sister Sandals Barbados.
- vs. Sandals Barbados: the immediate sister property, walking distance up the road. Sandals Barbados is the older, value-tier alternative. Royal Barbados is newer, all-suite, with the bowling alley. Stay at 1, Play at 2 lets you split.
- vs. Sandals Royal Bahamian: Royal Bahamian is closer to the US (50 minutes from Miami) with a private offshore island. Royal Barbados has the all-suite layout and the deeper dining.
- vs. Sandals Grenada: Grenada has the chainโs best diving and the Tunnel Loft architecture. Royal Barbados has the all-suite layout and the deeper dining.

When to go and how to find a deal
The Royal Barbados shoulder season runs late April through mid-June and again late August through early November. Barbados sits below the typical Atlantic hurricane corridor so the August-November shoulder is genuinely usable. Peak winter (December through April) is the most expensive window; January through March is the deepest peak.
Royal Barbados participates fully in the Sandals deal calendar. Sandals 7-7-7 sales (January, April, October) typically deliver 35-45% off rack rate. Black Friday usually adds another 5-10%. Stack the free anniversary night, the 10% military and first-responder discount, and the free honeymoon package for combined discounts of 50-55% off rack rate. The Skypool and Penthouse categories discount less aggressively; book those early during Black Friday. Full deal-timing playbook in my best Sandals deals guide.
My verdict for 2026
Sandals Royal Barbados is the right Sandals for couples who want every room to be a suite plus the chainโs deepest east-Caribbean dining lineup (33 restaurants when combined with sister Sandals Barbados via Stay at 1, Play at 2). The rooftop pool, the bowling alley, the Rolls-Royce-equipped top-tier suites.
- Book Sandals Royal Barbados if you: want every room to be a suite, want the chainโs deepest eastern-Caribbean dining variety, want the rooftop pool sunset bar, want the bowling-alley novelty, are upgrading from sister Sandals Barbados
- Skip Sandals Royal Barbados if you: want OWBs (book Sandals Saint Vincent or Sandals Grande St. Lucian), want the value entry pricing on the same beach (book Sandals Barbados), or want the chainโs strongest diving (book Sandals Grenada or Sandals Royal Curacao)

Frequently Asked Questions
Is every room at Sandals Royal Barbados a suite?
Yes. All 338 rooms at Sandals Royal Barbados are suites. There are no Caribbean-tier or basic rooms. The all-suite baseline drives the splurge-tier pricing but also means even entry-tier guests get suite-level layouts (sitting area separate from bed). The chainโs only other all-tier resort is Sandals Royal Plantation (all-butler at 74 suites). Royal Barbados is the larger version of the all-suite concept.
Does Sandals Royal Barbados have a bowling alley?
Yes. Lovers Lanes is a 5-pin bowling alley on the resort. The only Sandals with bowling. It plays as a date-night activity in the evening, with butler service for upper-tier suite guests. The novelty photo is real, and the alley is functional 6-pin scoring rules with full-service bar.
How does Sandals Royal Barbados compare to Sandals Barbados?
Both are walking distance apart on Maxwell Coast. Sandals Barbados is the older, value-tier alternative (280 rooms, more traditional Sandals layout). Royal Barbados is newer, all-suite, with the bowling alley and the rooftop pool. Stay at 1, Play at 2 lets you book Royal Barbados and dine at Sandals Barbados (and vice versa) on the same booking.
Does Sandals Royal Barbados have overwater bungalows?
No. The closest equivalents at Sandals Royal Barbados are the Skypool One Bedroom Butler Suites (private elevated infinity-pool patios). If overwater is the priority, see Sandals Saint Vincent, Sandals Grande St. Lucian, or Sandals Royal Caribbean. Full overwater bungalow comparison in my OWB guide.
When is the best time to book Sandals Royal Barbados for the deepest discount?
The shoulder windows: late April through mid-June, then late August through early November. Barbados sits below the typical hurricane corridor so the August-November shoulder is genuinely usable. Combine with a 7-7-7 sale plus the free anniversary night and the 10% military discount for the deepest stacked discount, typically 50-55% off rack rate. Skypool and Penthouse categories discount less; book those early during Black Friday. Full playbook in my best Sandals deals guide.
