I am Jim, a Sandals Chairmanโs Royal Club Diamond Elite member who helps over 1,000 couples a year plan their Sandals getaway. Sandals Royal Caribbean is the only Sandals in Jamaica with a private offshore island plus the chainโs original overwater bungalows, 30 minutes from MBJ.
This is my full 2026 review of Sandals Royal Caribbean: the beach, the rooms, the food, the pools, weddings and honeymoons, how it stacks up against the rest of the chain, and when to go for the best deal. You can check current rates and availability on Sandals.com if you want to compare while you read.
Quick take for 2026
- Where: Mahoe Bay, 15 minutes east of Sangster International on Jamaicaโs north coast
- Rooms: 225 rooms across 13 categories including Over-The-Water Honeymoon Bungalows
- Airport: Sangster International (MBJ), 30-minute Sandals transfer
- Best for: couples who want overwater bungalows close to the airport, honeymooners who want the private-island day, repeat Sandals guests upgrading from Montego Bay
- Skip if: you want the chainโs deepest overwater inventory (book Saint Vincent or Grande St. Lucian), want the closest airport (book Montego Bay), or want maximum pool variety (book Ochi)
- My rating: 4.7 out of 5 (the private island is genuinely unique)
Where Sandals Royal Caribbean is and how to get there
Sandals Royal Caribbean sits on Mahoe Bay, about 15 minutes east of Sangster International Airport (MBJ). The 30-minute Sandals transfer is the second-fastest in the Jamaica Sandals lineup (only Sandals Montego Bay is closer). The resortโs headline geography is its private offshore island, accessed by complimentary water taxi from the resort dock, running every 30 minutes during the day.
Flights into MBJ have nonstop options from most major US east coast hubs and Toronto. The Sandals airport lounge is included on arrival: free drinks, snacks, fast-track immigration assistance, and the dedicated shuttle to the resort. Full Jamaica context lives in my Jamaica vacation guide.
My take on the vibe at Sandals Royal Caribbean
The Royal Caribbean vibe is โJamaica with a colonial British accent.โ The architecture leans East-India-meets-Georgian (white columns, red tile roofs, formal gardens). The Royal Thai Restaurant on the private offshore island has its own pagoda and koi pond. The whole property feels more dressed-up and ornamental than the barefoot Sandals Negril, but lighter and more open than the imposing Sandals Grande Antigua.
Crowd skews honeymoons and milestone-anniversary couples. The overwater bungalows here were the second set Sandals built (after Sandals South Coast) and they remain a destination room category that drives bookings. You will see plenty of overwater-suite couples who book this property primarily for the room.
Energy level is medium-low: quieter than Ochi or Dunnโs River, more refined than Montego Bay. The included shuttle to Sandals Montego Bay (15 minutes west) effectively doubles your dining options through the Stay at 1, Play at 2 program.
The beach
Two beaches: the main beach on the resort property (a 350-foot crescent of white sand fronting the Caribbean Sea) and the private offshore island beach (a longer, less-crowded stretch with the famous beach swing photo spot, the Royal Thai Restaurant, and a swim-up bar pool). Both are calm-water swimmable.
The water taxi to the offshore island runs every 30 minutes from 9 AM to sunset (and special evening runs for Royal Thai dinners). The 5-minute boat ride is included. Most guests split their day: morning on the main beach where the watersports center is, afternoon on the offshore island for the photo and the quieter sand. Worth knowing: the offshore island has limited shade so bring a hat.
The pools and swim-up scene
Eight pools and six whirlpools across the two land sides plus the offshore island. The main lagoon-style pool sits between the Caribbean rooms and the beach. The offshore island has its own swim-up bar pool with a thatched-roof palapa.
Worth knowing: Royal Caribbean does NOT have a Crystal Lagoon mega-pool like Sandals South Coast. The standout instead is the infinity pool at the over-the-water suites, which has its own butler-served swim-up bar. Detailed comparison of every Sandals swim-up category is in my Sandals swim-up suites guide.
The rooms (and which suite to book)
225 rooms across 13 categories. The marquee category is the Over-The-Water Honeymoon Bungalow: 12 freestanding bungalows on a stilted boardwalk extending into Mahoe Bay, glass floor panels, private outdoor swim-out plunge, butler service. The OWB inventory here is the original Caribbean overwater fleet (Sandals built 9 OWBs at Royal Caribbean and 5 at South Coast, then expanded the format to other properties).
- Best entry pick: Caribbean Honeymoon Walkout Club Level. Direct ground-floor patio, club lounge access, premium amenities. Roughly 30% above the basic Caribbean tier.
- Best mid-tier pick: Royal Honeymoon Beachfront One Bedroom Butler Suite. Beachfront patio, full butler service, wraparound ocean views.
- Best splurge pick: Over-The-Water Honeymoon Butler Bungalow. Glass floor panels, private outdoor plunge, hammock for two over the water, butler. Mid-$2,000s per night during shoulder season, climbing in peak winter.
Full overwater bungalow comparison across the chain is in my OWB guide. For the broader Club Level vs Butler decision, see Sandals Club Level vs Butler.
Dining at Sandals Royal Caribbean
Nine specialty restaurants on the resort plus dining privileges at all 12 of Sandals Montego Bayโs restaurants through Stay at 1, Play at 2. That is effectively 21 restaurants across both bookings. Reservations are not required at most venues; butler guests get reservations made for them.
- Royal Thai (Thai, on the private offshore island): the marquee dinner reservation. Pagoda dining room over the water, lantern lighting, the most photographed restaurant in the Jamaica Sandals lineup. Reservations required.
- Bayside (modern Caribbean): plate-style modern Caribbean, beachfront patio.
- Eleanorโs (international steakhouse): wood-fired meats, strong wine list for an all-inclusive.
- Mariner Seaside (international): breakfast and casual lunch HQ.
- Cricketers Pub (British pub fare): the casual late-night option, fish and chips, draft beers.
- The Regency (international fine dining): white-tablecloth, dress-code dinner.
- Soy (sushi and small plates): fresh sashimi, smaller menu.
- Plus 2 more on top of that.
Top-shelf liquor is genuinely top-shelf, unlimited Robert Mondavi Twin Oaks wine, premium upgrades for butler-tier guests.
Activities, watersports, and whatโs included
The all-inclusive includes: PADI scuba diving (two boat dives a day, plus free Open Water certification), Hobie Cats, paddleboards, kayaks, snorkeling, and access to the offshore island all day. The dive operation accesses the MoBay Marine Park reef system.
For divers: solid program, MoBay reef is decent but not chain-best. If scuba is your primary trip purpose, see my best Sandals for scuba diving ranking. For Royal Caribbean guests, the dive program is well-run and you can dive both from the resort and from the offshore island.
Off-resort excursions: Dunnโs River Falls (75 minutes east), Mystic Mountain (bobsled and zipline), Martha Brae River bamboo raft. All bookable through the resort.
Weddings, honeymoons, and proposals at Sandals Royal Caribbean
Royal Caribbean is a popular destination wedding venue, especially for couples who want the offshore-island ceremony backdrop. Beach ceremonies use either the main resort beach or the offshore island; the Royal Thai pagoda area also doubles as a small ceremony venue. The complimentary Sandals wedding package works the standard way: 3+ night stay and the standard ceremony is free for the host couple.
Vow renewals follow the same rule (see my Sandals vow renewal guide). For couples planning to propose at the offshore island first (the beach swing is the most-requested proposal spot in the Jamaica Sandals lineup), see my Sandals proposal packages guide. Pair with the free honeymoon package and the free anniversary night on a return trip for the deepest combined discount.
How Sandals Royal Caribbean compares to its sister resorts
Royal Caribbean sits in the upper-mid tier of the Jamaica Sandals lineup. The headline differentiator is the private offshore island plus the original Caribbean overwater bungalows.
- vs. Sandals Montego Bay: the immediate sister property, 15 minutes west. Montego Bay has the closer airport (10 vs 30 minutes) and the founding-property OG vibe. Royal Caribbean has the private island and the OWBs. Stay at 1, Play at 2 lets you split between both.
- vs. Sandals Saint Vincent: Saint Vincent has the largest and newest OWB inventory in the chain plus the only Overwater Wedding Chapel. Royal Caribbean has the original 12 OWBs plus the easier flight access from the US.
- vs. Sandals Grande St. Lucian: Grande St. Lucian has 12 newer OWBs with Pitons backdrop. Royal Caribbean has the older OG OWBs plus the offshore island. Different vibes; both are strong OWB picks.
- vs. Sandals Dunnโs River: Dunnโs River is the newest Jamaica flagship (2023). Royal Caribbean is older and smaller, but has the OWBs that Dunnโs River does not.

When to go and how to find a deal
The Royal Caribbean shoulder season runs late April through mid-June and again late August through early November. Shoulder gives you the deeper deal stack and lighter resort occupancy. Peak winter (December through April) is the most expensive window; January through March is the deepest peak.
Royal Caribbean participates fully in the Sandals deal calendar. Sandals 7-7-7 sales (January, April, October) typically deliver 35-45% off rack rate. Black Friday usually adds another 5-10%. Stack the free anniversary night, the 10% military and first-responder discount, and the free honeymoon package for combined discounts of 50-55% off rack rate. The OWB category specifically tends to discount less aggressively; if OWB is the priority, book early during the Black Friday window. Full deal-timing playbook in my best Sandals deals guide.
My verdict for 2026
Sandals Royal Caribbean is the right Sandals for couples who want overwater bungalows on a Jamaica trip without committing to the Saint Vincent or Saint Lucia logistics. The private offshore island is genuinely unique in the chain; only this resort and Sandals Royal Bahamian have one. It is also the right pick for repeat MoBay-area guests who have stayed at Sandals Montego Bay and want to upgrade.
- Book Sandals Royal Caribbean if you: want overwater bungalows on a Jamaica trip, want the unique private offshore island day, are upgrading from a previous Sandals Montego Bay stay, are planning a destination wedding or proposal at the offshore island
- Skip Sandals Royal Caribbean if you: want the chainโs deepest OWB inventory (Sandals Saint Vincent or Sandals Grande St. Lucian), want the closest airport (Sandals Montego Bay, 10 min), want the largest pool complex (Sandals Ochi), or want the newest property (Sandals Dunnโs River)
You can see current Sandals Royal Caribbean rates and availability on the Sandals.com booking engine, or work through your Certified Sandals Specialist to layer the deal stacks above. To compare across the rest of the chain first, my complete ranking of all 17 Sandals is the place to start.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Sandals Royal Caribbean have overwater bungalows?
Yes. Sandals Royal Caribbean has 12 Over-The-Water Honeymoon Bungalows on a stilted boardwalk extending into Mahoe Bay. They include glass floor panels, private outdoor swim-out plunge, hammocks over the water, and butler service. Full overwater bungalow comparison in my OWB guide.
How does Sandals Royal Caribbean compare to Sandals Montego Bay?
Both are MoBay area, 15 minutes apart. Sandals Montego Bay is the founding property (1981), simpler, closer to the airport (10 min vs 30 min). Sandals Royal Caribbean has the private offshore island and the original overwater bungalows. Both share Stay at 1, Play at 2 dining privileges.
What is the private offshore island at Sandals Royal Caribbean?
A 5-minute water-taxi ride from the resort dock to the resortโs own private island, with the famous beach-swing photo spot, the Royal Thai Restaurant pagoda over the water, a swim-up bar pool, and a long quieter beach. Water taxi runs every 30 minutes during the day, included. Only this resort and Sandals Royal Bahamian have a private island.
Is Sandals Royal Caribbean worth the upgrade from Sandals Montego Bay?
Yes for honeymoons, OWB seekers, and offshore-island day fans. Royal Caribbean is typically 30-50% more expensive than Sandals Montego Bay. The offshore island plus the OWBs are the headline value-add. For couples on a value budget who want to test the Sandals brand, Montego Bay is still the better entry pick.
When does Sandals Royal Caribbean discount?
Same calendar as the rest of the chain: shoulder months April-June and August-November are deeper. Sandals 7-7-7 (Jan/Apr/Oct), Black Friday, plus the anniversary night and military discount stack. OWB category discounts less aggressively; book early Black Friday for OWB. Full playbook in my best Sandals deals guide.
